Ford Y-Block V8 Female Cap Pro Series Ready to Run Distributor

Upgrade your Ford Y-Block V8 — 272, 292, or 312 CID, 1954–1964 — with this Pro Series Ready-to-Run distributor, featuring an onboard circuit board ignition module with a magnetic pickup trigger, so there's no separate ignition box to wire in, while the external-coil design keeps the flexibility to run a higher-output coil. This version uses a female-style distributor cap, which requires plug wires with male terminals. It supports Mainline, Customline, Fairlane, Crown Victoria, Galaxie, F-Series, Edsel, Mercury Monterey, and Mercury Montclair applications running a Y-Block engine.

This distributor is not designed for vehicles that used a mechanical tachometer drive, such as Thunderbird, and is not compatible with Ford's earlier Flathead V8 or later Windsor, FE, or 385-series big block engines. The housing is machined aluminum with a steel drive gear best matched to cast iron hydraulic or solid flat-tappet camshafts, and rotation is counterclockwise. This distributor requires a 12-volt electrical system with an alternator and a coil rated at 35,000 volts or higher; it is not compatible with generator-based charging systems or vehicles still running an active ballast resistor in the ignition circuit — the resistor should be removed or bypassed as part of installation.

What Is a Ready-to-Run (RTR) Distributor?
An RTR distributor has the ignition control module built directly into the housing — in this case, a circuit board module paired with a magnetic pickup trigger — so it fires off a single 12-volt source without needing a separate ignition box wired into the circuit. This version uses a female-style cap, which requires plug wires terminated with male ends, and the coil stays external, requiring a coil rated at 35,000 volts or higher.

Performance Benefits
The circuit board module and magnetic pickup trigger replace factory points-style triggering, so timing holds steady without point wear or gap drift over time. Mechanical and vacuum advance are both included, allowing the timing curve to be tuned for carbureted street or performance driving on the Y-Block specifically — an engine family that predates Ford's later Windsor and FE platforms and uses its own distinct distributor and cap configuration.

COMPATIBLE WITH
FORD Y-BLOCK V8
• 4.5 L / 272 in³
• 4.8 L / 292 in³
• 5.1 L / 312 in³

NOTES
• Designed for Ford Y-Block V8 carbureted applications produced from 1954–1964.
• Features a female-style distributor cap — requires plug wires with male terminals.
• Will not fit Thunderbird applications that came equipped with a mechanical tachometer drive — verify your specific application before ordering.
• Not compatible with Ford's earlier Flathead V8, or later Windsor, FE, or 385-series big block engines — those require a different distributor.
• Requires an external coil with a minimum output of 35,000V — no separate ignition box required.
• This distributor is designed for a 12 volt electrical system with an alternator and a performance ignition coil of 35,000 V or more.
• It is not compatible with a generator and cannot be used with a ballast resistor.
• Distributor gear is most compatible with cast iron hydraulic or solid flat tappet camshafts; consult camshaft manufacturer for recommended gear material before installation.
